A quick update from our first stop at Meckering.
We set off from the Indian Ocean with a bit of rain and a howling wind. Channel 9 and Channel 10 came and did a story on the ride, so hopefully that will help Big Brothers Big Sisters awareness.
The camera crews followed us through to Perth taking footage – which was great because they held up traffic the whole way and made it very safe in the slippery conditions.
Out onto the highway and we flew – a great tailwind for much of the way had us averaging almost 40 km/hr for the last 45 kms of the 144 km!
We’ve set up camp for the night and about to tuck into some steaks.
At the start
Jack’s Angels (aka Support Team)
Jack at Meckering, WA
Jack’s looking strong, really going hard for the last 100 kms once we were clear of the traffic.
Update again asap.
Cheers

Jack and Brendon were interviewed by Nicole Dyer. Here’s the interview:

Jack’s just excitedly shown me a text sent from our mate Chris. It’s great quote that encapsulates, to a large extent, what the ride is about:
Sure I am that this day we are masters of our fate, that the task which has been set before us is not above our strength; that its pangs and toils are not beyond our endurance.
As long as we have faith in our own cause and an unconquerable will to win, victory will not be denied us.
Winston Churchill
Before we set off on this adventure and test, and after seeing how hard Jack has trained and the sacrifices he has made to even contemplate this journey, I thought it might be fitting to say a couple of words about Jack. Simple enough words:
Jack is a fine young man who is an absolute credit to himself and the many, many people who have helped him along his way to this point in his life. My sincere thanks if you’re one of those people.
My only hope with Jack is that he’s half as proud to be my son as I am to be his dad.
Regards and please wish us the wind at our backs!

Great people keep on stepping forward with the team at the best bike shop in Cottesloe (Cottesloe Cycles) helping out.
We took our spare bike into Cottesloe Cycles today at 12.30 for some last minute repairs.
The friendly team went above and beyond with the repairs and tune up to ensure we’re all set for tomorrow. When it came to pay the few hundred it would have cost we were met with a firm:
“No way guys, it’s a great cause and we want to help out. Hope what we have done helps.”
Fantastic stuff from the best bike shop in Cottesloe – thanks guys!

Howdy
We’ve moved the start from 6.00 am to 7.15 am because TV news is keen to cover the story.
Apologies for the late notice.
Cheers

Hello again
If you’re keen to come along to the start of the ride here in Perth tomorrow, the start is on Marine Parade (almost at the very end) at what I’m told is known as Swanbourne Beach (about 800 metres up from the Cottesloe hotel).
The location is on this map here.
Hope to see you there!
Cheers

Coolangatta Airport 9 Sept, 2008
Hi, Brendon here.
We arrived in Perth this after (1.30 pm local time) after a 5 hour flight from Sydney.
Rest of the afternoon was spent organising bits and pieces, a visit and talk by Jack to the Cottesloe Scout Group and then a big dinner.
Cheers

Some people are just so nice.
Craig Harper took some time to chat with Jack and I when we were in Melbourne last.
He rang today say he couldn’t come along to the Ride Celebration Dinner but wanted to support us by buying 2 tickets for the dinner for us to donate to 2 people who would like to come along but wouldn’t be able to afford it. Great stuff!
Phil Jauncey and his wife Ros have just sent another donation of $750! Phil is a Sports Psychologist and has shaken down his clients over the past few weeks for donations for us! Terrific.
Michelle Wu (left) is the World Age Group Triathlon Champion – Michelle is sponsored by Hammer Nutrition, the same people who sponsor us with ride nutrition.
Michelle emailed Jack to wish him all the best.
Glenn and the Cannibal team did our ride jersey and knicks, and donated some brilliant wind breaker jerseys, socks, caps and backpacks worth hundreds of $$$.
Thanks!

Jack and I set out this morning for our final training ride – an easy 45 km ride out into Tallebudgera Valley, finishing with a bit of a climb up Syndicate and Ducats roads.
We encountered a bit more of the local wildlife with about 40 cows being herded along the road at one point and then, on the return trip, a metre long snake on the road reared up at Jack as he went past about 50 cm away!
Probably wouldn’t have been a great last training session if the snake had of gotten him!
Cheers
Brendon
